Growing Green Thumbs: Young Gardeners Project with City Junior School

This June, we teamed up with City Junior for an exciting adventure—the Young Gardeners Project at Coram’s Fields. Our mission? To help kids in London discover the joy of gardening and learn how to care for nature.

At City Junior and Coram’s Fields, we know that today’s children are tomorrow’s caretakers of our planet.

As a seven-acre green space in the centre of the city, Coram’s Fields is best positioned to help children gain their earliest understanding of the natural world and sustainability, helping them make nature a part of their lives. By getting their hands dirty in the garden, they learned how fun and rewarding it can be to grow and care for  plants.

“A few weeks ago, we went to Coram’s field to do some gardening. It was an amazing experience” - Young Ilan

Welcome Session: A Nature Treasure Hunt
We started the project with a nature-themed treasure hunt. The kids explored all the cool spots at Coram’s Fields, seeing everything through a gardener’s eyes. This treasure hunt was a fun way to spark their curiosity and love for nature.

Project Begins: Planting Time!
Over the next three weeks, our young gardeners planted carrots, strawberries, and lupins. They learned all the steps to take care of their plants:

  • Tidying Up: First, they cleaned up the planting area. It’s important to start with a neat space for the plants to grow well.
  • Breaking Down the Soil: Next, they broke up the soil to make it soft and ready for planting.
  • Adding Boosters: The kids learned to mix in coconut husks (called khoya) to make the soil richer and better for the plants.
  • Planting and Watering: Finally, they planted the seeds and watered them, making sure the plants had everything they needed to grow.
The children had a blast each week, watching their plants grow little by little. Their excitement was contagious!

“I thought the planting and gardening was really fun! Since I don’t do planting at home”

A Growing Success

The Young Gardeners Project was more than just planting seeds—it was about growing a love for nature. By the end of June, our young gardeners knew a lot more about plants and felt a special connection to their green space at Coram’s Fields. They showed us that with a little help, kids can become awesome gardeners and nature lovers.

We’re so glad to to have such a wonderful response from our young gardeners. Do have a look at the thriving lupins on your next visit and let it inspire you to grow a little green in your home.

“Planting was very nice and I liked getting muddy. I also enjoyed playing on the playground” - Young Jiahan
