Is there a price tag on turning a person’s life around?
Sometimes there is. And while not everything can be solved with money, this story shows how a small contribution for some can be life-changing for others.
Our young person had it very hard over the past two years. Difficult relationships and a hectic family situation saw them leaving their family home on the local estate, choosing to sleep on the streets rather than stay one more night in the destructive environment of their home. Bright, ambitious, and disciplined, they couldn’t believe they found themselves sleeping rough, trying to stay warm and safe. Being very proud, they couldn’t admit to anyone what they were going through. Only through subtle signs did our employability youth worker recognise what was happening. Since then, the young person has been put on track to mend their life.
After a year of handling hard things like securing safe, sustainable accommodation, they turned back to their dream of higher education and a career in law. The situation is still very challenging, but with the employability lead’s support, they now have a plan, something to look forward to. The cost? Just £850 for the course to open the doors to stability, independence… safety, and no more rough nights.
They didn’t have that kind of money.
No one they knew had it.
And then they did the unthinkable – they asked for help. With Coram’s Fields’ employability worker, they engaged with one corporate partner, represented by one very passionate individual. They created a GoFundMe page, where they told their story – by video, so brave, so determined. A live showcase of their future career success. It took less than a week and 19 donations for them to reach the target.
The price tag for their future.
Yes, it does cost more than just £850 to ensure a future for a young person who needs help. It costs Coram’s Fields to employ the employability worker, the council to provide accommodation, and other support services to stay involved. However, £850 shows so clearly how much people who care can change a life.
